When
something big is a cause

then
becomes a
fait accompli
does
it lose its impetus to gather support?

Anti Abortion - Better as a Cause than a Result.
There is a school of thought from the back rooms and insiders of the conservative movement that the objection to Rowe v. Wade is better served as a CAUSE than to have its demise be wrought from a too-conservative court.
That to have RvW still on the books is a troop recruiter par excellance.
Should it be dismantled, the resultant rebellion of the public will re-ratcheted up to a much higher level.
The vast number of people in the middle are a benign and ineffective mass at present.
Most would agree that abortion is a sad choice to make, but to judge someone's particular circumstances that would lead to this choice is a delicate but private matter.
Unwanted children might often become poorly raised, become either burdens on society or even worse, might be some of their considerations in thinking so.
Even though they would abhor the act in its abstraction from a personal context.
So cynical Republicans realizing that their alliance to the Christian evangelicals on this matter has given them the strength in numbers to produce the Republican Revolution and take over the Executive, Legislative and subsequently on the cusp of the Judicial.
Knowing that should they succeed totally with this cause, the era of their association will begin to fall apart.
Social Christianity has often been on the side of the more lefter of causes in history.
Anti-slavery, Civil Rights, the defense of the poor, the dignity of labor has often in the past had the support and leadership rising from the clerical sectors.
Often aligning with Democrats and liberals.
This new alliance with the Republicans has been a clever co-opting of the cause by the always under populated Repbublican citizenry.
While many may indeed be True Believers in both campaigns ( social AND fiscal conservatives ) many have gone along or seemingly converted to this belief in order to gain strength through numbers.
Ronald Reagan was a flip-flop with this topic. Romney too. Bush daddy switched as well.
If this effort should succeed the reason for partnership would be no longer of any urgent or over riding need. The goal accomplished, the troops might dissolve.
Also, the subsequent and inevitable consequences will be an uncomfortable scenario of never ending heart breaking stories.
When it was illegal before, lives were destroyed, deaths and damage occurred.
Careers of real doctors were ruined and the creation of illegal practitioners made for dangerously unhealthy results.
To almost succeed keeps the foot soldiers in the battle. A rallying hue and cry to gather new members build strength.
However, I would bet no one admits this publicly.
